As announced a few weeks ago, Huawei has presented at the Mobile World Congress 2019 with heavy artillery: the new Huawei Mate X, a mobile phone with a folding screen that also incorporates the star technology of the fair this year, 5G connectivity. It, therefore, becomes the first smartphone to combine both features.
We had the opportunity to see the Huawei Mate X both during the presentation keynote at the MWC and in its first promotional video, in which several of its main features are shown, beyond the folding screen, a clear and rapid response to Samsung’s mobile phone presented this week.
In this case, the characteristics of the Huawei Mate X make it a competitor to be taken into account by other high-end. Its screen is 8″ when it is fully deployed, and its panel is OLED.
This mobile has everything you can ask for a smartphone this year 2019, in addition to the two main innovations right now. It is not a qualitative leap in terms of power or memory, although on the other hand, it is not necessary either.
We do a little review of everything we know and have revealed about the first Huawei folding phone.
Huawei Mate X: features and price of the first folding mobile with 5G
Two screens that add up to 8 inches
In particular, it is striking that the panel is OLED, a particularly expensive item that will surely trigger the price of the Huawei Mate X when it goes on sale.
And not only that, but it is also a foldable OLED. Unlike other similar mobiles, in this case, they do not look like two screens joined by a hinge, but a continuous screen that can be transformed according to the user’s needs at any time.
This technology has been called Falcon Wing and consists of a hinge of more than 100 components, a success from the point of view of the necessary engineering but a potential problem for the user.
However, we must differentiate them as if they were two different: one of 6.6″-filled- and one of 8″ when it is fully deployed.
One of the things that draw attention is that it has no hole or notch in the front area, in addition to a thickness of only 5.4 mm deployed and 11 mm when the two screens meet.
It’s a design milestone, that’s for sure.
Leica camera and double screen, also in photos
One of the advantages of having two screens is that you can see the photo they are doing while they are doing it, something that the Huawei CEO has emphasized as an advantage.
In addition, it also has a Leica front camera, although many details about the specifications of it have not been provided.
Yes, we have seen in the images a triple rear camera system, which is probably identical to the Mate 20 a few months ago, praised as the best camera available in mobile telephony right now.
Balong 5000 and Kirin 980
A surprise of this Huawei Mate X is that it will equip neither processor nor modem of Qualcomm, but the Kirin 980 of Huawei with its own modem compatible with 5G, the Balong 5000 that already appeared a month ago.
According to the brand, it offers the highest mobile speed in the world, capable of downloading 1 GB of data in just three seconds when connected to 5G networks.
Obviously, as for Kirin 980, there is not much surprise. It is the best processor of Huawei today, both for power and graphics capacity and also for energy efficiency, so it was sung that would be chosen.
In this case, it seems that at least in the fast loading section if they have hypervitaminoses the chip, which rises to 55W capacity, 15W more than in the standard Mate 20.
In theory, you can load 85% of its capacity – 4,500 mAh – in just 30 minutes. It becomes one of the fastest, but still behind some mobile with SuperVOOC.

Price and availability of Huawei Mate X
Obviously, the million-dollar question about this mobile is what will be the price of the Huawei Mate X and when it can be officially purchased all over the world.
There is an added problem, and that apparently will go on sale around the month of June, although there are still some tests to be done with the 5G. When they are ready, the launch date will be confirmed.
For now, the price of Mate X is € 2,299 with 8 GB of RAM + 256 GB of internal storage.
